I Am Nut OK Vegan Cheese
We have recently started stocking a new vegan cheese brand, I Am Nut OK! Staff member Justine, finds out the background to the brand and why we choose to stock them.
The Story
Started by an American and Italian couple Angela & Nivi. Born of a newly vegan Italian struggling to give up cheese!
Where is it made?
Hackney Wick
Packaging
The consumer product has a compostable inner pack and cardboard outer pack.
Cheeses come to us without polystyrene, in a cardboard box that we recycle.
I Am Nut OK use repurposed packaging from deliveries they have received.
Ingredients
The recipes were developed in a home kitchen, so the ingredients are less industrial than many other vegan cheeses in the market.
Around 65% of the world's population experiences some form of lactose intolerance, with the highest numbers among people of colour, which makes plant-based cheeses a far more inclusive option.
They conducted a Life Cycle Assessment Report on one of their cashew-based cheeses, which concluded that the greenhouse gas emissions were 72% lower than that of a dairy-based equivalent.
Like all the best vegan cheeses they are fermented and aged.
The cashew nuts are sourced from Vietnam, which those who have read the cashew blog will know has it’s challenges. However we want to support a small company doing great things. By doing so we hope to encourage and support them to shift their sourcing. We are fully aware that this may not be economically viable.
Living Wage
I Am Nut OK are not able to pay all their staff the London Living Wage yet. We hope that they will be able to in the future.
Why is this range a non organic exemption at Get Loose?
We want to support a small local company making a great product.
Using the cheeses
They have a range of recipes on their website.
We have our first Get Loose recipes inspired by I Am Nut OK;
Which ones do we stock?
There is quite a range, and we are currently seeing which ones are favourites with our customers. So please let us know which ones you love.
