Producer Spotlight — Organic Sunflower Mince

One of our more unique products is Sunflower Mince. A meat substitute made from organic sunflower seeds and nothing else!

Why sunflower seeds?

  • Sunflower seeds are easily grown in Europe.

  • They provide homes and food for birds, insects & bees.

  • Sunflower husks (also known as sunflower hulls, sunflower kernels, refer to shells of sunflower fruits after the seeds are taken out) are used to provide bio-thermal energy for a small group of houses.

  • The founders of Sunflower Family realised that the protein and fibre left after pressing sunflower oil could be a meat substitute. Nothing is wasted.

Where does our Sunflower Mince come from?

Sunflowers are grown across Europe and processed in Germany. The product comes to Get Loose in 10kg paper sacks by land and boat. We had a few issues with Brexit, but the supply seems to be back on track! Check out our UK wholesaler on Instagram at @sunflowerfamilyuk .

How much mince do I need for a meal?

Generally you will need around 30-50g per portion depending on how “meaty” you want the dish to be!

Workers rights & Conditions

Sunflower family ensures fair working conditions for the organic farmers they work with. The mince is packed at a workshop employing adults with disabilities.

To soak or not to soak?

Some recipes and sunflower mince fans, swear by soaking the mince in water for 10-20 mins before using. Others love just chucking it in! Try and see which you like best.

Storage

Keep sunflower mince in an air-tight container in the cupboard until you need it.

How much is it?

£2.65 per 100g. We sell it loose so you can get a little bit to try or a lot to stock up!
