Producer Spotlight — Karma Drinks
We have been stocking Karma drinks since the early days of Get Loose so we thought it was time to give them the Producer Spotlight treatment. We also sell a lot of these drinks in the warmer months!
How did it all start
Karma drinks started with their infamous Cola. They made a few bottles with kola nuts from the Gola rainforest in Sierra Leone. Discovering that none of the money from using this nut goes back to the people where it grows they decided to change that.
What is a Kola nut?
The kola nut is the fruit of the kola tree (Cola acuminata and Cola nitida), indigenous to West Africa. The trees, which reach heights of 40 to 60 feet, produce a star-shaped fruit. Each fruit contains between two and five kola nuts. About the size of a chestnut, this little fruit is packed with caffeine.
The original flavour of all cola drinks used to come from the kola nut extract. It is not longer the case for major commercial Cola drinks, such as Coca-Cola though.
The Karma Foundation
1% of the price of every Karma drink sold goes to the Karma Foundation. This entity ensures that money from using the kola nut goes back to the people who grew it. Not through aid but via trade, and projects such as education and infrastructure. The communities decide what the money is spent on. The Karma Foundation are supported by local partners on the ground. Projects examples: building a bridge, scholarships for school children, medical supplies, seed bank and literacy programme.
